WRITE - Why We Sew
Today I've been rediscovering old things that I first learnt at art college back in the 90's. Whilst listening to a radio program about the history of needle work and the transition from using needle and thread as a voice to record history, a means of expression, or necessity to make a living (making sails for ships or fishing nets for example), its got me thinking about the journey sewing has taken over the years and how it has become domesticised and considered a woman hobby or pastime. I remember learning about Womanhouse, the 1974 art work by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schiparo.
